Uniform
Introduction
This is a brief description of the uniform that we in the 18th require.
Jacket
Richmond depot style. Because of the time frame we portray the only jackets that concern us are known as:
- Type 1 (spring 1862 – spring 1863)
- Type 2 (spring 1863 – spring 1864)
- Generic enlisted mans frock coat
- Sent from home frock coat
All of these styles are acceptable but we would advise you to buy the best quality you can, preferably made of Jean cloth with a full period lining. Many modern reproductions available from the average suttler is the wrong material or the wrong cut.
Type 1 or 2 jackets should have 9 buttons on the front with either “Block I” or state issue buttons. A small amount of “Script I” buttons could be used.
Pants (Trousers)
Preferably made of Jean cloth, either military issue or civilian style are acceptable but it is important for all button holes to be hand sewn, and the buttons to be made of either bone, wood, composition or tin. Again quality items are recommended due to the types of materials and the cut used by cheaper manufacturers.
Suspenders (Braces)
Any type of period style suspenders of period style are acceptable, preferably with hand stitching. Attention should be paid to the metal work, buckles etc.. these should be made of brass or mild steel, try to avoid modern nickel or chromed buckles.
Drawers (underwear)
To be made of cotton, osnaburg, muslin or wool flannel. Of period style with hand sewn button holes and preferable bone buttons.
Socks
Any civilian style hand knitted from wool or cotton.
Shoes / Boots
Federal issue brogans (Black) or Jefferson Davis boots, (black or brown)
Vest (waistcoat)
Any period civilian style, most commonly wool. Military issue federal/confederate, again most commonly wool.
Hat
- Period civilian style hat
- CS Issue Kepi
